Icon of Class: Liza Minnelli in Cabaret

1972 saw the rise of a versatile star named Liza Minnelli. A Hollywood royalty by birth – her mother, late actress Judy Garland, played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and her father, late Vicente Minelli, was a renowned stage and film director – Liza, an accomplished singer and dancer, plotted her path to success with Cabaret, a silver screen adaptation of a musical with the same name.

In the Bob Fosse-directed film, Liza took the main protagonist role of Sally Bowles, an American cabaret performer in Weimar Republic (now Germany) prior to World War II.

Sporting a distinctive look inspired by Hollywood’s silent film icons Louise Glaum and Louise Brookes, her on-stage appearance in the film, performing the song “Mein Herr” or Dear Sir, on a chair in plunging body suit, a bowler hat and thigh high boots will forever etched in the minds of her fans as an iconic scene that propelled her to global fame.

Even close to half a century later, Cabaret and Liza’s interpretation of Sally Bowles have served as inspiration to fashion designers and stylists everywhere. Now, why don’t you relive the glamorous Sally Bowles moment with an updated twist?
