The Rants' Diairies: This Dior Homme Collection Made Me Think!

To make a statement loud and clear, it does not have to be verbal. All you need is an outstanding item ― a jacket, a cape, a coat, blazer, and a shirt or accessories ― to do the berating for you. Now, that is the beauty of fashion.

As I perused the Dior Homme Winter 2017 collection, I can’t help it but to fall for the last few looks on the runway. The vivid print of a group of men ― or boys, depending on how you look at it ― is haunting, to say the least.

Why did I say haunting? Well, to an extent, it really got me thinking and questioning myself, what are they doing?

Were they involved in a massive brawl? Were they in some kind of demonstration?

At some point, it even reminds of an ancient engraving based on the accounts of ancient historian Josephus on the ransacking of the Temple in Jerusalem.

But hey, what I see differs from what you and the others see, so offense is certainly out of the subject. Nevertheless, to each negative side that we see, there is a positive side to it.

There is a probability that the boys portrayed in the photographic print were having a party ― a rave as per Kris Van Assche’s collection inspiration for the winter season. Again, to each on his own.

From my personal outlook, I would say that fashion designer and Dior Homme Creative Director, Kris van Assche, is a true genius.

As menswear labels tend to stick to the norms with sometimes banal interpretation of ideas and the repetition of looks, textures and fabrics ― heck, I had people told me that they’ve the same thing from the same label every season! ― Van Assche bravely delved into subjects that are away from the mainstream thinking, such as subcultures.

Using Dior’s timely honoured house codes and its sartorial menswear tailoring, he infused the know-how and the experience into a collection that screams individuality, yet at the same time, a wearable art that makes people think. Add in his smart way of presenting the print in different textures and materials  think photographic print blazer made of sequins! ― it made this collection more interesting!

If I ever get my hands on the cape and the jackets, or at least the bag, I would love to walk into a crowded street. Well, even the badge (right), which comes in a set of 3, is suffice, I believe.

With it, I would approach some of the people who pass by, and ask them what they see in the photographic print. I wanted to know what’s on their mind when they look at the photographic print. After all, at the end of the day, we are to each to his own.

Dior Homme Winter 2017 ready-to-wear collection is available now at all Dior Homme stores, selected mixed-brand retailers and leading fine departmental stores worldwide.
