Diversity is the New Chic ... Miu Miu FW2017 Collection

As we head towards the future, our acceptance and perception towards beauty ideals have definitely changed. Gone were the days where beauty is defined by stereotypical features – leggy, skinny and fair-skinned; in are the sexy curves and multitude skin tones and hair textures.

Yet for fashion, the situation may be tad different. These days, it is obvious that major fashion houses are shifting their attention to the gluttonous demands of Generation Y (thanks to their growing spending power), subsequently forgetting about the generations before the generation of loyalists who helped them built their brands into what they are today.

Nevertheless, at Miu Miu, fashion designer Miuccia Prada is turning away from the trend and instead, extends her invitation to fashionistas, both young and old, to “move away from the niche and be part of a bigger audience instead”.

“It’s about the madness of glamour, in front of an uncertain future,” says Prada on her FW2017 collection for Miu Miu, “and I am getting interested in so many kinds of beauty.”

Refused to be defined by a single silhouette, Miu Miu girl’s wardrobe for the season is set to boast an eclectic concoction of diverse style elements borrowed from the decades of yore. Think flapper dresses of the 20s, flared skirts of the 40s, quirky yet girlish graphics of the 70s, psychedelic Keith Harring and Jean Basquiat-esque prints and 50s collars. All these are rounded up with excessive glamour plus chic madness.

Faux fur or eco-fur predominates the collection, lusciously transformed into plush belted overcoats, riotous tartan print treatment and fancy newspaper boy caps with blown-up proportion, befitting Russian princesses and wives of the rich oligarchs. Natural fox furs on the other hand are made into large 50s styled collars adorning translucent patent leather trenches with 70s black piping.

The pyjama sets come with bottom-flared trousers while the floral prints are blooming largely all over the fabrics.  Metallic pailettes are sparsely arranged on pouf-shouldered dresses to mingle effortlessly with meticulous Greco-Roman embellishment whilst diamante jewelleries that were the staple of the Art Deco period are irreverently paired with 70s prints and silhouettes. The hodgepodge of style is further enriched with footwear in exotic skins, satiny textures and luxurious diamante embellishments.

Distinguished by an updated “Miu” front fastening and the jewel buckle strap, the My Miu bag came in various permutations using diverse materials such as exotic python skin, fox fur and the brand’s signature matalasse leather.

As madness serves as the collection’s concurrent theme, bold coloured furs are cheekily transformed into bag straps – a feature that is rarely applied on designer handbags.
