Ode to the Misty Pacific ... Kenzo FW2014 Menswear Collection

Dampness ― the first word that came to mind when I viewed Kenzo menswear collection for fall/winter 2014. It came right after sighting at the first look of the collection – a four-button jacket with squared waist, slightly baggy trousers and huge-soled shoes.

The dampness that I had in mind was not the steamy kind that we are accustomed to in this part of the world. After all, one does not need to walk in huge-soled boots when the downpour is over in Kuala Lumpur.

It is more of a misty one with eternal coldness shrouding every perimeter of the ground. Think Seattle or Vancouver. I even tried imagining Edward Cullen (of Twilight) dressed in the over-layered pieces while courting his mortal lover Bella Swan in the small ― fictional ― town of Forks.

For fall/winter 2014 collection, the iconic tiger is nowhere to be seen on the menswear collection. Perhaps creative duo Humberto Leon and Carol Lim (founders of cult store Opening Ceremony) had sent him on a holiday somewhere in the tropical isles for a much-deserved break.

The colour palette starts with sombre, dark hues but later evolve into bright tints of yellow and blocks of red, green, purple and blue. Tailored pieces, especially suits in square silhouettes make the bulk of the collection and crafted in materials that are warm yet dapper.

Puffer jacket – a winter essential - features a silhouette that is akin to A-line, albeit slightly narrower while double-breasted coat boasts neon yellow hue with contrasting stripe print collar in black and white.
There are also knitted sweaters laden with fancy attention grabbing melange of text and patterns.

For those who are heading to Montana or Aspen for vacation, then the classically nuanced fur coat or jacket with hints of 1970s style may help you adapt to the rustic surrounding so well.

Are you having too many dark-hued pieces in your fall wardrobe? Fret not because the colour-block knits are here to give your look that extra pizzazz. Another alternative is quilted sweater in animated hue of neon yellow that certainly turn you into the centre of attraction at the ski resort.

If patterns are what you need to spice up your style, perhaps printed knit sweaters featuring winter sceneries such as a breathtaking image of alpine forest during snow time or a coat with rustic cottage and large, beaming moon imagery is a good fall fashion investment indeed.

Ready-to-wear and huge-soled shoes aside, heed the alluring call of the roomy men bags in subtle metallic tints that are useful for all purposes – work, gym and travelling.

Kenzo fall/winter menswear and accessories collection will be available at all Kenzo stores, selected fine department stores and multi-brand boutiques worldwide in autumn.
