The M-Word ... Ralph Lauren SS2014 Collection

Seasons come and go within the fashion world, but not for Mod. Ever since the swinging 60s and up the 21st century, Mod has remained strong and very much appealing to the new generation of fashionistas.

Moreover, the upcoming spring/summer 2014 will see a new batch of “millennium Mod” generation springing into action in the streets, thanks to Ralph Lauren’s modish interpretation of the swinging fashion era.

Presented to trend-setting fashionistas and fashion editors alike at the recent New York Fashion Week, Lauren’s spring/summer collection kicks of with pieces splashed in monotonous black and white stripes and colour combination.

Collegiate or preppy silhouettes are omnipresent in the first batch such as bold-striped peplum jacket, monotonous v-neck sweater with deep neckline, A-line shift dress with long sleeves and white collar, floral print coats and pant suit in graphic line print.

Even Ralph Lauren’s iconic accessory - the Ricky Bag - receives graphic Mod treatment on patent leather!

The appearances of tartan print, newsboy cap, feminine dark pantsuit with palazzo pants, and Mary Quant-esque prints in this new collection seem to pay homage to inevitable fashion icons of the past such as Twiggy, Barbra Streisand (remember the newsboy cap she wore in “What’s Up Doc”?) and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Yet, all eyes are definitely on the brightly coloured pieces that must have walked out from the storied fashion editorials of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar circa 1960s.

The colourful shifts, especially the ones with contrasting coloured panels, certainly bring a breath of fresh air to the wearer. Add the hot and humid climate in this part of the world; they are just perfect for your everyday wardrobe staple.

The colourful evening gowns with wavy ruffled hems require less adornment as the demure colours of blue, green and orange are enough to make you stand out from the rest of the sequin-drenched crowd.

Progressing with a slew of white-doused pieces, visions of two fashion icons of the 60s late actress Talitha Getty and musical maven Marianne Faithfull appeared as the show closes in the form of black pantsuit and a bright red caftan with deeply plunging v-neckline.

Ralph Lauren’s spring/summer 2014 ready-to-wear collection will be available at Ralph Lauren stores and select department stores early next year.
