Sophisticated by the Seaside ... Balenciaga Resort 2014 Collection

Balenciaga’s move of appointing Alexander Wang as its latest Creative Director is indeed, a right one.

I have to say that Wang made me smitten the moment he debuted his current pre-Fall 2013 collection, which caught my breath away as I saw them in the recent issue of US Harper’s Bazaar

In other words, the way he plays around with the cuts, the shapes and the silhouettes, which are super modernist and minimalist at the same time, is equal to seeing the hallmarked French maison de mode being revisited by the late founder himself, Señor Cristobal Balenciaga.

For the Resort 2014 collection, the working palette is made of the monotonous hues of black and white – certainly un-Malaysian as Malaysian fashionistas, as we know, are always in the mood for riotous tropical colours – with a dash of grey.

Moreover, one would also be surprised that neither swimwear nor cover-ups are to be seen in this collection, as the pieces resemble more of post-winter getups than what you would wear while lounging in the cabanas of The Four Seasons Langkawi. Yet, put aside the monotonous palette. One could not ignore the air of sophistication the collection exudes.

Though the silhouettes and the shapes may seem quite unusual, yet they are still inviting. There are lots of cut-outs that are all tastefully done and softened at the edges on areas like the back and the shoulders.

For example, all eyes are surely drawn to the sight of the cropped top with billowed oval shoulders. Nevertheless, a simple precaution: never wear it with a slouchy posture or you will end up looking like the Hunchback of Nôtre-Dame, but with a dash of refined style.

Cropped top aside, no one should ever refuse Wang and Balenciaga’s invitation to slip into its remarkable drapes. The softness of the folds and the sharp precision of the lines, without a doubt, invoke the inner Grecian goddess out of the wearer.

To accompany this minimal but rather dramatic collection is the accessories such as the boxy bag, which at a glance look no less than a shopping bag sans the logo lettering, with chain holders, jewelleries and hats.

Balenciaga Resort 2014 collection will be available at Balenciaga stores and selected mixed-brand and department stores starting from November 2013 onwards.

  1. A new spin to resort wear? But then again, this will comes across as a most highly wearable collection - something that will spill over into spring or autumn with relative ease. Lets hope there will be more character in the subsequent resort collection...
