Lacoste Collaborates with Keith Haring!

Towards the end of 1970s, New York City was the unparalleled hotbed of hedonism. Past midnight, after-hour revellers took the hallowed dance floors of Danceteria.

In this iconic club, the crowd danced to the DJ-spun music for 12 hours straight or watched performances by emerging talents who soon become giants of the entertainment industry such as Madonna, Duran Duran, Sade, Berlin, Run DMC and LL Cool J. Behind the scene, a budding artist named Keith Haring moonlighted as a busboy.

By day, Haring studied painting at the School of Visual Arts. Using the subway as his lab, Haring worked with white chalk and black, unused advertisement backboards in the stations. 

His signature juxtaposition of simple lines, bright colours, black outlines and animated figures expressing energy, spontaneity and zest for life soon captured public attention and led to his 1980 exhibition at Club 57 in the East Village.

Though Keith Haring died in 1990, his extraordinary body of works continues to leave a lasting impression on both art and fashion world - especially to the younger generations. 

Today, his masterpieces can be seen in on buildings and walls across Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, and Minneapolis as well as in museums such as The Australian Centre for Contemporary Arts, Paris’ Musee de L’Art Moderne de la Ville, and Stedeljik Museum in Amsterdam.

Active figure aside, other Haring’s equally legendary figures such as “Barking Dog” and “Heart” drawings are also liberally featured on a t-shirt or discreetly applied on the collar of a polo shirt or at the back of a tennis shoe.
