An Enchanted Sicily ... Dolce & Gabbana FW2014 Collection

The fairy tale heroines would have rose in unison from their front row seats and gave their loudest applause to Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana at the end of Dolce & Gabbana’s fall/winter 2014 collection show.

Reason being a) it is a fairy tale inspired collection and b) it runs away from their typecast style as the collection is brimming with Sicilian splendour.

Aptly called Enchanted Sicily, the fall/winter 2014 line-up showcases a rich assortment of clothes liberally adorned in cute fairy tale-esque appliqués — certainly enough to cause a delightful commotions among Snow White and the Red Riding Hood.

Working on a palette of dark, earthy and sensuous colours such as black, mauve, grey, red and green just to list a few, the pieces are crafted out of luxurious materials such as silky chiffon, raise-print jacquard and sheen sateen with touches of plush pelts.

Classic images of enchanted forest dwellers – think cute animals such as owls, foxes and swans – flowers and keys are omnipresent in forms of appliqués and prints. Appliqués and prints aside, heavy jewel embellishments and laces also make their appearances this season.

With sensuous draping, the sheerness of the soft chiffon fabric and corsetry element, the duo created a sinful confection – a body-con dress with billowy draped sleeves and laced-front corseted bodice that effortlessly evoke the wearer’s beauty.

Another chiffon piece that will take the breath away is a chiffon gown peppered with key print and worn with a bejewelled head covering that mimics the chain mail head covers of the medieval knights.

Speaking of the bejewelled head covers, do expect to see them on magazine covers and editorial spreads as they could be one of the soon-to-be-highly-coveted accessory trends for fall/winter season.

Shift dresses come in many permutations – heavily embroidered, printed and layered with lace – while outer wear and skirt suits are precisely constructed with the latter powered with the presence of peplum.

Another mainstay of Dolce & Gabbana which is the classic black square collared dress with three-quarter sleeves is also present in the collection.

Coats are luxuriously lavished with fur trimmings around the hood and the pockets, just enticing enough to make the Red Riding Hood ditch her plain hood for the one in plush red fur.

To complete the fairy tale-inspired looks is a coterie of constructed bags, chained minaudières in exotic leather with embellishments and a selection of painted sheen boots.

The finale ends with models striding with pride in heavily bejewelled body suits, mini dresses and matching headgears.

Dolce & Gabbana fall/winter 2014 ready-to-wear and accessories collection will be available at all Dolce & Gabbana stores, selected fine departmental stores and multi-brand boutiques worldwide in autumn.
